Why Create a Custom Mod or Plugin?
Minecraft players enjoy a unique experience from their servers, which is given through custom plugins and mods that add authenticity to your Minecraft servers. This gives players not only a unique experience but will also increase the likelihood of them playing on your server longer, and even recommending it to other players. Many of the largest Minecraft servers have numerous custom plugins or mods, giving a players a reason to play on their servers, and donate to keep them running.
Should I transfer to Sponge?
Since the Bukkit and Cauldron projects have been discontinued, servers that offer Forge mods and want to update to the latest Minecraft versions cannot do so on the same platform. This is where SpongeForge comes in for many server owners, allowing them to have the same functionality they did on their Cauldron servers on the newest Minecraft versions. In this scenario, it is a great idea to transfer to the Sponge platform.
However, current Vanilla Minecraft servers can remain on the Bukkit platform by transferring to Spigot. Most Bukkit plugins are supported on the Spigot platform and allow servers to easily transfer from Bukkit to Spigot. Despite Bukkit being discontinued, Spigot is still active and is updated to the latest Minecraft versions, so server owners don't need to switch to the Sponge platform to support the new Minecraft versions.
Transferring to Sponge can be a very time-consuming process for large servers, so many server owners that run Vanilla Minecraft Servers choose to stay on the Bukkit platform by switching to Spigot.
What is Sponge?
Sponge is a Minecraft plugin API compatible with both Forge and Vanilla servers. This enables server owners that offer Forge modifications to use server-side plugins, allowing them to manage their server with more control.
This function is somewhat similar to what Cauldron and MCPC+ did on previous Minecraft versions, however the Cauldron/MCPC+ project has since been discontinued.
Since the Sponge API is compatible with both Vanilla Minecraft Servers and Forge Minecraft Servers, making plugins on the Sponge API means they can be used on both platforms.
What is a sidemod?
A sidemod is exactly what it sounds like! A modification that utilizes another Minecraft modification. A great example of a Minecraft mod that has numerous sidemods for it is Pixelmon. These mods do not modify the Pixelmon mod, but utilize what the mod adds to do many amazing things. For Forge servers, sidemods are a good way to customize the player experience by adding more features to Minecraft modifications they know and love.
